Most of Arizona's highway rest areas now closed

RVers in Arizona or headed there may find their favorite highway rest areas closed. The Arizona Department of Transporation (ADOT) has temporarily suspended operations at 13 of its 18 highway rest areas.

Declining transportation revenues resulting from the weakened economy and the state budget shortfall have caused a reduction in ADOT's budget by nearly 25 percent this fiscal year. ADOT said that temporarily suspending operations at the 13 rest areas will allow it to reallocate funds to focus on roadways first. The status of the rest areas will be assessed in June.

Overdrive magazine, a trade publication for independent truckers, ran an article about 25 or 30 years ago entitled "No Rest for the Weary" when Pennsylvania started closing their rest areas.. It has become a national epidemic since then with many states closing rest areas.. It continues to worsen.. States depend more and more on tourism and then prevent those tourists who choose to use their highways from taking rest breaks without having to leave the highways.. OH ! ! WAIT ! ! Could this be part of the modern America's "Creed of Greed"? Get all these tired travelers off the highways and into motels, restaurants & shopping malls.. In a country who's motto has changed from "In God We Trust" to "In Greed We Lust" does this seem improbable ?

I think you've hit the nail on the head.

Greed seems to be running (or is it ruining) the country.

It starts at the top (Federal Govt.) and trickles all the way down.

The only thing you or I are good for is opening our wallets and empting them into someone elses hands.
